Internal Communications Job Market Analysis: January 2025

After the expected December dip, January returns to the norm for internal comms jobs.

The internal communications job market showed solid activity in January 2025, with 211 positions posted across the US, UK and Canada. After December’s 142 jobs, January’s surge broadly aligns with labor market trends in January data from recruiting software provider iCIMS (35% increase in US job openings vs. December) and others.

January bounce back

The internal communications job market continued its typical patterns, with January's 211 positions maintaining the steady flow of opportunities we've seen over the past several months:

London tops for IC jobs

London's position as the internal communications job hub held steady in January 2025, with 32 new roles. The New York metro area followed with 12 positions, while Texas metro areas collectively posted 9 roles.

Comparing January's top 10 to six-month average rankings reveals some interesting shifts. While London (6-month rank: 1.0) and New York (2.5) maintained their traditional leadership positions, several areas saw notable movement:

  • Nashville's appearance in the top 10 with 7 roles is particularly noteworthy, as it averaged 12th place over the previous six months

  • Chicago, typically ranking 4 over the past six months, showed slightly less activity in January

The big cities don't tell the whole story, though: internal comms positions were available in 102 locations across the US, showing significant opportunity beyond the traditional coastal business centers. This geographic diversity suggests organizations of all sizes and locations recognize the value of strategic internal communications:

Remote roles hold steady

Remote internal communications positions maintained their typical share of opportunities in January 2025, with 29 remote roles representing 13.7% of all positions. This aligns closely with the six-month average of 27 remote roles per month or roughly 12% of total positions.

Looking at remote job trends over the past six months shows consistent demand:

  • Highest: October 2024 with 42 remote jobs (14.9%)

  • Average: 27 remote jobs monthly (~12% of total roles)

  • January 2025: 29 remote jobs (13.7%)

Manager-level positions dominated January's remote opportunities with 14 roles, while director and specialist/coordinator levels accounted for 4 and 6 positions, respectively. This distribution suggests organizations are comfortable offering remote arrangements across various seniority levels, though mid-level positions remain the most common.

Fortune 100 continue to invest in internal comms

Fortune 100 companies posted 21 internal comms roles in January, double the number in December (10) and close to November’s total of 27.  Amazon led with 6 openings, while General Motors and JPMorgan Chase each posted 3 roles.

Several Fortune 100 companies showed consistent hiring across Q4 2024 and January 2025. Amazon has been the most active, posting multiple roles every month (3 in December, 6 in January), while JPMorgan Chase returned to active hiring in January with 3 positions after a December pause. Johnson & Johnson and Verizon have also maintained steady hiring momentum, appearing in multiple months' data. This pattern of sustained hiring from major companies suggests ongoing investment in internal communications capabilities rather than one-time team expansions.

The range of Fortune 100 companies hiring expanded in January, with 12 different organizations posting positions, including:

  • Technology: Amazon, HP, Apple

  • Financial Services: JPMorgan Chase

  • Healthcare: CVS Health, Johnson & Johnson, Centene

  • Manufacturing: General Motors, Caterpillar

  • Consumer: PepsiCo

  • Telecommunications: Verizon

A spike in HR-focused internal comms roles

While this matched August's volume and fell slightly below October's peak of 14 roles, January stood out for its balanced distribution of opportunities.

Remote work featured prominently in HR communications, with 4 positions (33.3%) offering remote arrangements—the highest number of remote HR roles in any month since July 2024. The roles also showed an impressive range, from specialist positions to director-level opportunities, with notable postings from Apple (Director, People Team Internal Communications), Visa (Director, People Communications), and Northern Trust (Communications Manager, Chief Administrative Officer and Human Resources).
