New insights

Over the last few years, internal comms pros have worked through many messages relating to RTO, hybrid, remote, new ways of working, etc. Here are a few recent reports and resources to help you develop a message and strategy for your colleagues as this topic continues to swirl.

  • “Critical evidence is missing from the connections-at-work conversation, and this shortfall is leading organizations and leaders astray,” say the authors of this HBR article that provides an overview of recent research on connectivity in the workplace.

  • Maybe some leaders just don’t care about the data. That’s one point in this New York Times piece about the difference between what the science says (e.g., remote is positive or neutral) versus company RTO moves.

  • Stanford’s Nick Bloom, who is quoted in the NYT article, also shared a helpful summary on LinkedIn about an analysis of 1,200 RTO policies in the US. In addressing what drives RTO policies, “CEO age and gender matter a lot.”

  • “Google’s guide to management Is back for a very different work world,” says this Bloomberg article about the relaunch of Google re:Work. If you’re not familiar: a long time ago Google did not believe in managers and got rid of them, which led to all sorts of problems (e.g., at one point, a senior leader had 130 direct reports). To rectify things, a team collected data about what really made the best Google teams work. While the study’s conclusions weren’t radical (e.g., teams led by effective managers experience lower turnover rates), Google published all their information, guides, tools, etc online as Google Re:Work. The site went quiet during the pandemic, but it’s back and refreshed with tons of great resources you can steal from one of the world’s most successful companies.
